Parent Notification Incident on 8/19/24

8/20/2024

August 20, 2024
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Yesterday, two students at our school were involved in an incident. We want to make sure that the facts are known. No guns were involved, and we are taking the incident very seriously because school must be a safe place for all kids to learn. Social media is great at broadcasting news very quickly, but it is also good at spreading rumors and causing problems.

Your involvement is crucial in this. Please help us by monitoring your student's social media presence. As parents, you play a pivotal role in shaping your child's future. Open communication is key to keeping them safe, ensuring you know where they are and who they associate with. If you become aware of a potential conflict, please call us at 697-9400. Your vigilance will help us in our mission to keep all students safe. #Wai'anaeStrong!

Mahalo Nui,

Ray Pikelny-Cook

Parent Letter, Shooting in Community 8/15

8/19/2024

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are writing to inform you of a serious incident that occurred last evening, Thursday, August 15, 2024, in our community.
At approximately 8:30 p.m., Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded to a call regarding a 15-year-old boy who had sustained gunshot wounds to his upper and lower body on Ala Akau Street. Paramedics provided advanced life support and transported the boy to the hospital in serious condition.

Shortly after that, at approximately 8:35 p.m., a 19-year-old man arrived at an EMS unit with multiple gunshot wounds. He was also transported to the hospital for treatment.
The safety and well-being of our students and community are our top priorities. We understand that this incident may be upsetting and cause concern. We are working closely with law enforcement as they investigate this matter.

Waianae lawmakers and Honolulu Police Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan have called for the community to unite in the fight against gun violence. To address this pressing issue, a “Youth Empowerment and Crime Prevention Townhall” will be held on Wednesday, August 21st, starting at 5 PM with dinner, followed by the town hall meeting at 6 PM. We encourage all parents, guardians, and community members to attend.
We have made counselors available to support students and families who may be affected by this incident. If you believe your child would benefit from speaking with a counselor, please do not hesitate to contact our school.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. Sincerely,
Ray Pikelny-Cook
Principal, Wai’anae High School

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are writing to inform you about a lockdown that occurred at Waianae High School today, approximately at 11:00 AM. This action was taken in response to an alleged shooting incident at the nearby boat harbor.

The safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priorities. We followed established protocols in cooperation with the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) to assess the situation and determine when it was safe to lift the lockdown.

We understand that these situations can be unsettling, and we want to assure you that we take these matters very seriously. We have implemented comprehensive safety procedures to protect our school community.

We will continue to provide updates as necessary. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Sincerely,
