April 24th, 2012 - Wai'anae, Hawaii

Sweat, heat and a race against the clock are all a part of this year's Wai`anae Adventure Challenge. The 7th annual challenge was held on April 23rd and 24th at Pililaau Army Recreation Center and Our Lady of Kehau. The challenge consists of different military exercises and an obstacle course. For returning Wai`anae High School JROTC members the pressure was on to match the success of last year's tournament.

"Yes, I feel that everyone's expecting us to um, win, as much as we did last year so, that's scary, but then we're just gonna give it our all, and see what happens on Sunday," said Junior Tashawna Wright.

Day 1 had cadets participate in crab walks, river crossings, canoe paddling, the rope bridge, tug of war and more physical training. As the days went on, some cadets felt the exhaustion of the day, while others found a way to push through.

"Well, we competed in three events so far, and it has been very challenging, but we're not tired, we have one more to go and we're gonna do great", said Wright.

All the hard work, dedication and time put in by the cadets were in hope to win the covenant grand prize known as the eagle. Roosevelt High School's JROTC took home the eagle this year. Still Wai`anae High School JROTC won three awards in all and aren't stopping at that.

"We don't get to take a break, we've already started planning for next year", said Chuck Furtado, WHS JROTC Lieutenant Colonel.

Wai`anae isn't the only school who has already begun thinking about their goals for next year.

"To win the eagle. Um, yeah I mean, they have a lot of training to do but, I know they can do it cause they have a lot of potential", said Kristel Guino, Kapa'a High School JROTC Cadet.
