Finger Scanning

Dear Parents and Guardians,

One of our primary goals at Wai'anae High School is to provide an enjoyable dining experience for your teenager. This means ensuring they have enough time to not only eat a nutritious meal but also to relax, laugh, and socialize with friends. Socializing is a vital part of the day—it provides a well-deserved break, refreshes students for afternoon classes, and even encourages them to try healthier food options.

To give our students more time to eat and unwind, we need to speed up our lunch lines. Currently, manual entry, forgotten ID numbers, and lost ID cards cause significant delays. To solve this, we are implementing a finger-scanning ID system, similar to the technology used on many smartphones. With a simple touch, students are identified quickly and easily, keeping

the lines moving.

Because we value your family's privacy and peace of mind, here is what you need to know

about how the system works and how your data is protected:

1. It is 100% Voluntary

Participation is completely optional. You may OPT OUT if you do not want your child to

participate, and they can simply continue using the current ID method. You can also OPT IN at

any time in the future.

2. We Are NOT Fingerprinting Students

The system does not take or store images of fingerprints. Instead, the software scans unique

points on the finger and instantly converts them into an encrypted string of numbers (a

template). It is impossible to recreate a fingerprint from this number, and these templates cannot

be delivered to any outside agency.

3. Your Data is Secure and Private

  • Limited Information: The encrypted template is only associated with the student's name, ID number, grade, and school.

  • Strict Security: Al templates are stored behind the school district's firewall with the samehigh level of security used for all student records.

  • No Vendor Access: Our vendor, identiMetrics, does not host, own, or have access to any of our data.

  • Legal Protection: These templates are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). When your child graduates or leaves the school district, their template is permanently deleted.

We are excited to introduce a system that is safe, easy, accurate, and efficient so our students

can spend less time waiting in line and more time fueling their bodies and minds. If you have any questions, or if you would like to opt your child out of this system, please do not

hesitate to contact us.
