Dear Waiʻanae High School Parents and Guardians,
We are writing to inform you of a serious safety incident that occurred on campus today and the
immediate actions our administration took to address it. We were made aware that a student
went online and posted that he was in possession of a weapon while in a classroom.
Our administration and staff immediately responded by quickly removing the student from the
classroom and securing a bag that allegedly contained the weapon. The student was then
brought to the office for questioning, where we were able to safely retrieve a BB gun and several
gaffs, which are used in chicken fighting, from the bag.
As part of our standard safety protocols, we promptly notified the Honolulu Police Department,
and they responded to the situation. We want to be very clear: our campus is safe, and we will
remain diligent in our commitment to keeping our students and staff secure.
Please be reminded that any violation of bringing firearms or weapons on campus is a very
serious offense that can lead to a year-long suspension. We urge you to please speak with your
child about what is and is not appropriate to bring to school. It is crucial that all dangerous items
and weapons are secured at home, as our school is not the appropriate place for them.
Thank you for your partnership in helping us maintain a safe and respectful school environment
for everyone. If your child was affected by the online post and needs support, please know that
our counseling team is available to assist both students and staff.
Sincerely,
Ray Pikelny-Cook
Principal, Waianae High School
