Dear Waiʻanae High School Parents and Guardians,
We are writing to inform you of a serious safety incident that occurred on campus today and the
immediate actions our administration took to address it.
Earlier today, a fight occurred during a school assembly. Following the fight, our administration was made aware of a threat made by a student regarding bringing a weapon onto campus.
Our administration and staff immediately responded to the initial fight and safely separated the parties. As part of our standard safety protocols, we promptly notified the Honolulu Police Department (HPD), and they responded to the situation. The safety of our campus was and remains our top priority, and we took all necessary steps to investigate and contain the threat.
We want to be very clear: our campus is safe, and we will remain diligent in our commitment to keeping our students and staff secure.
Please be reminded that any violation involving bringing firearms or weapons onto campus is a very serious offense that can lead to a year-long suspension, consistent with the Department of Education's zero-tolerance policy. Please speak with your child tonight about what is and is not appropriate to bring to school. It is crucial that all dangerous items and weapons are secured at home, as our school is not the appropriate place for them.
If your child was affected by this incident or needs support, please know that our counseling team is available to assist both students and staff. Please contact the front office if you would like to connect with a counselor.
Thank you for your continued partnership in helping us maintain a safe and respectful school environment for everyone.
Sincerely,
Ray Pikelny-Cook
Principal, Waianae High School
