Dear Wai‘anae High School families,
We want to share important news about a new pilot program coming to Wai‘anae High School this school year. Beginning this month, our school will participate in the Department of Education’s School Resource Officer (SRO) program on Oʻahu, in partnership with the Honolulu Police Department.
The purpose of the SRO program is to strengthen safety and support on campus while building
positive relationships between students and law enforcement officers. The officers assigned to our
school will serve as mentors and trusted adults for students. Their work may include supporting school safety and well-being initiatives, visiting classrooms, and engaging with extracurricular programs and school activities.
This pilot builds on successful SRO programs already in place on the neighbor islands, where schools and local police have partnered for years to create welcoming and secure learning environments.
What to Know:
Why was our school chosen? Each pilot school was selected in collaboration with HPD.Schools were chosen for their unique opportunities to connect students with career pathways and community partnerships.
What will officers do on campus? Their focus will be on mentorship, building relationships, and supporting school programs. While officers will retain law enforcement responsibilities, the emphasis of this program is positive engagement.
How will success be measured? The program will run through the 2025-26 school year. The DOE and HPD will review its impact before making decisions about the future of the program.
We want to assure you that this program reflects a collaborative effort with HPD to provide students
with more support, mentorship and opportunities to connect with positive role models.
If you have any questions about this program, please reach out to our school office at 808-697-9400.
Mahalo,
Ray Pikelny-Cook
Principal
